We started our weekend by taking a walk around Iizaka town. Our guides were nice enough to show us some unique foods around Iizaka. My favorite food was the croquette, a type of deep-fried mashed potato pocket. It was magnificent and I already want to drive back to Iizaka to buy more!
After that we drove to a nearby rice paddy where we and about 50 other people planted a single rice field by hand. I was afraid of the spiders at first, but I took a deep breath and did it anyway. There were a lot of frogs living in the rice field as well, but I thought they were so cute! The mud was warm and I liked how it squished between my toes! I was able to plant two whole rows of rice plants before we ran out of plants and had to leave. I had a lot of fun, and I enjoyed my time greatly!
After we finished planting rice our guides took us to a popular, local Iizaka Onsen next to a river. The water was very hot but I dipped myself in the water up to my neck! The other girls thought I was crazy.
After that we went to a nice dinner at a man's house with a bunch of the people we had planted rice with earlier. One of the men of the house showed us his soft-boiled eggs that he made with his own onsen(hot spring) at his house. He thanked us for helping out planting the rice field. He shared some really nice sake with us. It was delicious! He also fed us some nice gyoza(dumplings), karaage(deep-fried chiken), and soup. We also got to eat some of the soft-boiled eggs we saw earlier! We were able to talk with other people who had helped with the rice planting. We got to talk to a lot of people and socialize. I had a wonderful time.
